Why are your insurance rates being increased on your home or commercial property?
Answer: Because your house has not been properly mitigated and insurance companies know that in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm, properties that have not been properly strengthened are more likely to be damaged.
What is a mitigation report?
Answer: A form created by the State of Florida and the insurance regulators of the State of Florida to ensure that your home is structurally sound and capable of withstanding traumatic storms, high winds, and pressures associated with storms. Sometimes it is referred to as the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802).
Specifically, the mitigation report addresses several conditions of your home or commercial property. For example, is your property up to today's current building code? If your property is not up to the current building code, your structure is weak- to the point of almost guaranteed failure at impact of a high velocity storm.
Factors of a mitigation report to reduce the cost of your current wind policy insurance premium include, but are not limited to, protection to every opening of the structure (Miami-Dade approved hurricane shutters or impact resistant glass), roof covering up to today's building code (tile, shingle, flat, metal, shake, etc.), renailing of the decking, secondary water barrier, proper strapping of the structure (a required bracket or brace supporting every truss to the main walls of your home); and proper support bracing in critically weak structural areas of your home. Other factors of your mitigation report include the construction framing type and the geometry of your roof.
Who can perform the mitigation inspection?
Answer: This inspection MUST be completed by a qualified inspector. The only acceptable inspectors are a licensed general contractor, a building official, a professional architect or engineer.
